Successful haploidentical stem cell transplantation grants new life to a 4-year-Old girl at the American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Hyderabad

Mother Rescues Daughter from a Rare Medical Condition Through Stem Cell Donation

The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Hyderabad accomplished a medical milestone by successfully treating Deepika, a 4-year-old girl, with innovative haploidentical stem cell transplantation with her mother as the donor.

The patient’s condition worsened with critical thrombocytopenia, platelet count plummeting to 3000. Dr. Ashok Kumar, Haemato-Oncologist at AOI, suspected immune thrombocytopenia, initiating steroid treatment. Following tests revealed amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia, a rare congenital marrow disorder.

“Congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia (CAMT) is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by a severely low number of megakaryocytes, a type of bone marrow cell that makes platelets that are important for clotting and preventing bleeding. Deepika’s case exemplifies the extraordinary resilience of young patients and the power of advanced medical interventions. Our collaborative approach, combined with her mother’s selfless contribution as a donor, paved the way for this heartening success”, Dr. Ashok Kumar explained.

To improve diagnostics, the researchers used Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and discovered a homozygous MPL mutation linked to congenital amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia. Given the complexities, AOI Hyderabad chose curative haploidentical stem cell transplantation with Deepika’s mother as the donor.

Deepika faced seizures and hypertension during her peritransplant period. The medical team successfully treated these issues, ensuring her safety. After five months of intensive care, her platelet count increased significantly, exceeding 100,000, indicating a positive treatment response. Her medication regimen was gradually reduced as her health stabilized, and she now relies on a single medication.

“By embracing cutting-edge treatments and fostering a nurturing environment, we aspire to provide hope and healing to every patient and family that walks through our doors. Deepika’s journey to recovery after undergoing a rare and complex Haploidentical stem cell transplantation underlines AOI’s dedication to pushing medical boundaries for the betterment of patient’s lives,” stated Dr Prabhakar P, Regional Chief Operating Officer.

The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Citizens Specialty Hospital, Nallagandla, Hyderabad, is a premier cancer treatment facility within a 300-bed hospital. It provides inclusive, high-quality cancer care through global collaborations and a specialization in paediatric haematology, BMT, and Uro-oncology.

AOI’s robotic program utilizes modern technology for precise surgical interventions. They prioritize optimal comfort and relief through advanced pain management and provide 24-hour critical care support.
